Did you know over 75% of Americans suffer from periodontal disease? And most aren’t even aware…
Periodontal treatments depend on the type of the gum disease and how severe it is. If the disease is caught early, and no damage has been done to the supporting structures under the teeth, you may simply need a professional cleaning. Sometimes a deeper cleaning called scaling or root planing is needed. In this treatment, the dentist removes plaque and tartar down to the bottom of each periodontal pocket.
If it is bad enough where the deep cleaning doesn’t work, periodontal surgery could be needed. Surgery allows the dentist to remove tartar and plaque from hard-to-reach areas. Then the gums are stitched into place to hug the teeth tightly. Surgery can reduce pocket depth and make it easier to keep teeth clean.
Surgery can also be done to repair any damaged bone that is a result of gum disease. In this procedure, the bone is rebuilt or reshaped.
